- Along with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter Kia Carens will soon get iMT option in diesel engine

As BS6 Phase-2 is kicking in from April 2023 all auto manufacturers are gearing up to make their models compliant with new emission rules. Here we will talk about the Kia Carens which is all set to get BS6 Phase-2 and E20 fuel compliant engine. With this Kia is adding an option of iMT in Carens Diesel engine. The South Korean major has also added two new base variants in the car.
Kia Carens Diesel iMT
As of now the Kia Carens in its diesel engine gets 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter gearbox. New iMT gearbox will offer customers more choices and it will be priced between above two gearbox options. These details were surfaced from official documents issued by government authority.
Kia Carens M-Drive & P-Drive Base Variant
Apart from adding iMT gearbox option in diesel engine new base variants of the car are also in the works. These two new variants are called M-Drive and P-Drive variants. M-Drive is the base variant of diesel engine. For 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol this variant has also been homologated.
After M-Drive there’s new P-Drive variant as well. This is a 5-seater base variant homologated with 1.5-litre smartstream petrol engine. The M-Drive variant which is available in 1.5-litre diesel and 1.5-litre NA petrol doesn’t get 5-seater option.
Premium is the base variant of Kia Carens as of now. New P-Drive variant will sit below the Premium variant and it will be the new entry-level variant of Kia Carens. Kia will offer it in both 5-seater and 7-seater options. The 5-seater P-Drive variant could get a price tag of ₹9.55 lakh (ex-showroom). At present the base model of Kia Carens costs ₹10.20 lakh (ex-showroom).
In its segment the Kia Carens has only one rival and that’s Maruti Suzuki XL6. With introduction of Kia Carens Diesel iMT and new base variants the South Korean brand is aiming to further boost its presence in premium MPV segment. In terms of sales the Kia Carens is already ahead of XL6 but Ertiga sales are higher than Carens on which Maruti Suzuki XL6 is based.
